The San Dieguito Lagoon Trail is the start of the 70 mile Coast to Crest Trail starting at the San Dieguito Lagoon and ending at its source atop Vulcan Mountain near Julian. This very level 5.5 mile packed gravel trail has great views of the lagoon and is a wonderful habitat for migrating, salt marsh and shore birds. There are many interpretive signs along the path to help educate us about the estuary. We will make it to the beach just south of Dog Beach and walk for about ½ mile on sand before returning on the same pathways. This hike is rated Easy.
This hike will start at the San Dieguito Lagoon Staging Area along San Andreas Drive just off Via De la Valle in Del Mar. Exit I – 5 at Villa De la Valle and go East to San Andreas Drive and turn right. Park on the street just past the California Bank & Trust and behind the Petco store. You can find restrooms in the shopping development at McDonalds and the Chevron.
Dogs OK, bring water and a snack, poles not necessary, any hiking shoe OK. Possible lunch afterwards at Milton’s or other.
