Description: The Wilderness Garden Preserve is a hidden gem located along the San Luis Rey River in northern SD County. There are various interconnecting loop trails in the Preserve, totaling about 4 miles. All of the trails except one is very level and quite wide. Only the Special Trail which commands a wonderful view of Palomar Mountain is fairly steep for about ¾ of a mile with maybe a 200 foot elevation gain.
Wilderness Gardens became the first county preserve in 1973 and has a rich history (museum may be open), many vegetation habitats and attracts many native animal species.
Most trails are quite wide which will enable social hiking. Wear hiking shoes, poles recommended for the steep section and a possible water crossing, bring plenty of fluids and a snack. Portable restrooms are located in many areas of the Preserve .Some may wish to stop at the Casino on the way home for Cinco de Mayo lunch or perhaps a game of chance.
We will arrange a carpool leaving from the NC Mall parking lot between BJs Restaurant and the Macaroni Grill at 8:30. (202 East Valley Parkway, Escondido)
