Crest Canyon is an open space area that separates Del Mar from Del Mar Heights. The vegetation is primarily coastal sage scrub and chaparral dotted here and there by Torrey Pines. It's a good birding spot because it borders housing on the west that attracts suburban birds and San Dieguito Lagoon on the north which is a draw for shore birds. To reach Crest Canyon take I-5 to Via de La Valle. Go West on Via De La Valle to Jimmy Durante Bl. and take a left. Follow Jimmy Durante Bl. around the fairgrounds until you reach San Dieguito Dr. Turn left on San Dieguito Dr. until it becomes Racetrack View Dr. The canyon opens up on the right with the trailhead. Parking is on the street. Please bring binoculars and good walking shoes.
