HIKE - Cowles Mountain Barker Way Approach

HIKE - Cowles Mountain Barker Way Approach

HIKE - Mike Goldman will be leading this Barker Way Approach to Cowles Mountain Peak. As both the highest peak in the City of San Diego and one of the most popular hiking destinations in the County, Cowles Mountain makes for a must do hike. To avoid the crowds, we will be taking the eastern approach from the Barker Way Trailhead. This 3.5 mile hike includes an elevation gain of 1000 feet and is rated moderate to strenuous. From the top, the views are spectacular, assuming it is a clear winter morning. This rocky trail has many log or rock steps with lots of switchbacks.
Wear sturdy hiking shoes, poles highly recommended and bring plenty of fluids and a snack. Porta Potty at the trailhead.
Directions: GPS Location 6941 Barker Way - Exit I - 8 at College Avenue and go north 1 mile. Turn right on Navajo Road, continue 2.7 miles east to Cowles Mountain Boulevard, and turn left. Proceed 0.5 miles to Boulder Lake Avenue and then make a left to reach Barker Way. Park on the street close to the gated unpaved service road. Trailhead is on the left.
